The Rock Shop

Home / The Rock Shop /

The Rock Shop was written in 1999 and first staged in 2000 (with a cast of over 250). It was an interesting time for me. My own children, Katie and Nik, were 10 and 7 respectively. I was enjoying their company more than ever and wanted to write something that explored the relationships between parent and child in a very lighthearted way. Of course, that is only one tiny aspect of The Rock Shop, but an amusing one, I hope.

I had just finished working on ‘The Pilgrim’s Progress’ (also available through Earwig Productions). It is a serious and at times emotionally draining piece of theatre and I wanted to create something which was completely different – something outrageous, something utterly ridiculous. The image of a friend and colleague of mine, a huge Rugby player, dressed in a pink tutu and big, heavy boots dancing across the stage was actually the starting point! I’ve no idea where the image came from but he did end up playing the part of a candyfloss dancer – with great aplomb!

And so The Rock Shop was born. It has very happy memories for me. It is saucy, stupid and great, great fun. If you decide to produce it, I hope it brings you as much pleasure. Please send me a photograph of your candyfloss dancers! – Mike Carter
